Emma, a character in the middle grade novel Blue

BLUE

Middle Grade Novel -- coming out soon

An 11-year-old mystic must learn to speak her truth no matter what people think.

Maisie-Grace LaForet is a dreamer of nightmares that come true, a girl who can hear the voice of the forest. The only place she doesn’t have to hide is with her best friend, a tree named Blue, in an old growth forest where the 11-year-old has spent most of her life.

Maisie faces a tough choice. Her mother wants her to leave the forest and go school after a lifetime of homeschooling to become “socialized”. But Maisie feels she’s got plenty of socialization with the animals, the clouds, the trees.

A terrible dream seals the girl’s fate -- loggers are coming to cut down the forest. The dream comes true – they always do – and she gets the landlord to spare Blue. She knows she has to try to save the rest of the forest, too. She has to go to school.

Rules, and noise, and bullies, and too many kids. She’s highly sensitive and wades through school in a fog. An unlikely bond forges between Maisie, JAX, a quadriplegic artist, and a farm girl named Macon. An activist teacher sends them on an adventure into Maisie’s forest. After a failed attempt to save the forest, Maisie decides to quit school. What’s the use? Nothing she says or does makes any difference.

Then it gets worse. A tragic misunderstanding takes away any hope Maisie-Grace has left.

Will Maisie stop pretending? Will she speak her truth? Will she allow people to see she's a mystic.

Illustrations for Blue

As part of my writing process, I felt compelled to illustrate my characters. I'm planning to use these images in a children's picture book.
